Do you anticipate the arrival of cherry blossoms after winter, like the poet AE Houseman in his much loved poem “Loveliest of Trees the cherry now”? Many would agree that the sight of massed cherry trees flowering is one of the loveliest you can experience.
In Japan, cherry blossom is a symbol of good luck, love, and springtime. As cherry trees only flower for a couple of weeks, they also represent human mortality, as a reminder of how short and precious life is.
Seeing cherry trees flowering is so popular in Japan that people track the progress of cherry blossom season – they call it the sakura zensen!
Japanese cherry trees start to flower in Okinawa in January, then as the weather warms up, the more northerly trees in Kyoto and Tokyo burst into flower by the beginning of April.
During cherry blossom season, Japanese people enjoy the centuries-old tradition of hanami or picnicking beneath blooming cherry blossom trees to celebrate and honour the blossoms.

Seeing cherry blossom in Japan is an experience like no other. The sheer quantity of trees and the way they contrast against the skyscrapers and traditional buildings of Tokyo is truly magnificent. The cherry blossom season or “sakura” is best seen in the last week of March and the first week of April.
You can’t go far in Tokyo without seeing the cherry blossoms but here are the top locations for the most impressive display.
- Kita-no-maru Park – Kudanshita Station

Other Places in Asia to see Cherry Blossom
Seoul, South Korea

Seoul is a fantastic place to visit to see cherry blossom in Korea, because the trees are all over the place. Cherry blossom season in Seoul is around the first two weeks of April.
One of the best places to see cherry blossoms in Seoul is Seokchon Lake. Situated between high-rise buildings and Lotte World Tower (an iconic Seoul skyscraper), Seokchon Lake is a particularly beautiful setting for cherry blossoms.
The western portion of the lake is also home to Lotte World, a popular amusement park in Seoul. With the lake, buildings, and theme park, Seokchon Lake offers a unique cherry blossom viewing experience.
Seokchon Lake is easily accessible by public transportation, with many bus stops and several subway stations nearby.

Busan, South Korea
Submitted by Emmas Day Dream
One of the best places in the world to experience the beauty of the cherry blossom season is Busan, South Korea. While Seoul is also a gorgeous location for cherry blossom viewing, the ocean views that Busan offers just take it up a notch.
There are many locations in Busan where you can see the cherry blossoms, including Daejo Ecological Park and Oncheonjang River Park, but the most central and conveniently located place to enjoy the cherry blossoms (not to mention the most scenic and iconic) is Moontan Road, on Dalmaji Hill.
To get here, take the metro to Jangsan (the end of line 2) and take either bus number 2, 7, or 10 up the hill. Taxis are also extremely cheap, so another good option is to taxi from Haeundae beach. The massive cherry blossom trees reach over the road, creating a tunnel of pink flowers that you absolutely cannot miss.
For your trip to Busan, I recommend finding a hotel along Haeundae beach. While the other beaches in Busan are beautiful, Haeundae is closest to the best place to see the cherry blossoms and some of the best things to do in Busan.
While in Busan, you can’t miss visiting Gamcheon Culture Village and Haedong Yonggungsa Temple (the temple by the sea), as well as budgeting for a day to lounge on the gorgeous beaches that Busan has to offer.

Alexandra, near Queenstown
Submitted by The Aquarius Traveller
Springtime in New Zealand is around September and when the city of Alexandra holds its annual Cherry Blossom Festival. This is just over an hour’s drive from the major tourist hub of Queenstown.
The festival itself runs over a particular weekend, but the Cherry Blossom trees are displayed all over the small town and can be viewed throughout the month.
There are daily Intercity bus services leaving from Queenstown, or you might find it easy to hire a car to get around. Accommodations are limited, but the Alexandra Heights Motel or the Alexandra Avenue Motel will keep you central to town.
If you’re looking for something else to do, then take a short hike to the Alexandra Clock on a Hill. It’s a working clock face, a short 10-minute walk, and 11 metres in diameter. This will also give you an overall view of Alexandra.

Berlin might not be the first place you think of for cherry blossom season, but it’s actually a great city to see them. Berlin in spring is the time to see cherry blossoms in April or May depending on the weather.
One of the best places to see cherry blossoms is near the Lichterfelde Süd Sbahn station in southwestern Berlin. Take the S25 or S26 to get there, and then it’s a short walk to the Kirschbaumallee Park.
This location is symbolic since this was the border between West Berlin and East Germany. The cherry blossoms were a gift from Japan and planted where a section of the Berlin Wall once stood. Now it’s a gorgeous park, especially when the trees are in bloom.
Looking for a great place to stay? Circus Hostel in Mitte is a popular option for budget travelers. Or try 25 Hours Hotel for a splurge. It has fantastic views over the Berlin Zoo.
While you’re in Berlin, don’t miss the big attractions like the Brandenburg Gate, TV Tower, Berlin Cathedral, Museum Island, Bernauer Strasse Wall Memorial, East Side Gallery, and so much more.

The best place to see cherry blossom in Edinburgh is at The Meadows, a big park only a five-minute walk from Edinburgh Castle. The cherry blossoms line the pathways through the park and make a beautiful archway.
There’s also beautiful cherry blossom lining Princes Street. This is the main shopping street in Edinburgh and overlooks the castle. The blossoms aren’t as impressive as The Meadows, but the backdrop of the castle is incredible.
Both these spots are in the middle of town and so can you easily see them by walking there. While the dates differ each year, the cherry blossom usually comes out around mid-to-late-April.

The Bloesempark (Cherry Blossom Park) in the Amsterdam Bos (forest of Amsterdam) is one of the best places to see cherry blossom in the Netherlands.
The park consists of no less than 400 (!) Yoshino cherry trees that were donated by the Japanese Women’s club in 2000.
The best time to visit is around the end of March and the beginning of April when the blossom season starts. The Bloesempark is a very popular site, so arrive early if you want to avoid the crowds.
The bloesempark is not actually in Amsterdam, but in Amstelveen, about a 40-minute bike ride from Amsterdam central station. This is also the best way to reach the Bloesempark.
